4th Tank Corps' part in the recent triumphs earned it recognition for valor and it was redesignated the 5th Guards Tank Corps. Despite losses in men, machines, and munitions in those victories, 5th Guards was ordered to continue the advance. The Soviet High Command decided that the battered enemy was beaten and would retire behind the Dnepr River. Supplied with their new guards badges and uniforms, the 20th Guards Tank Brigade of the 5th Guards Tank Corps attacked southwest toward Kharkov.
Objectives: Continue to push west, do not let the Fascists catch their breath. Strongpoints in villages, at road junctions and bridge crossings must be eliminated. If the enemy is unable to hold these positions, the Red Army will succeed in cutting off men and material still trying to retreat. The lead platoon will be followed by your platoon; the command platoon will be held in reserve. Be aware that the enemy may launch local counterattacks to attempt to blunt your advance.
